APPLY TO BECOME AN APPRENTICE

Thank you for your interest in the IBEW 288 Inside Wireman Apprenticeship Program. This program is overseen by the Waterloo and Mason City Electrical JATC. All questions regarding your application should be sent to the JATC Training Director, Christina Henzen.

Applicants interested in the program must meet the MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS listed for our INSIDE WIREMAN program. This program is a 4-year "Earn While You Learn" program that combines paid on-the-job training as well as schooling. We accept applications for our 4-year program year-round, and conduct interviews monthly.

What is the Application Process Like?

The first step towards a career as an Inside Wireman begins with your acceptance into our Apprenticeship Program. This can be a lengthy process. It is important to remember that you are pursuing a career, not a job. Applicants must fill out an online application (see below). To see if you qualify for the program, please make sure you meet the the MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS and have the REQUIRED DOCUMENTS.

Once you have submitted your application, a representative will reach out to you regarding next steps. If you meet the MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS but do not meet the criteria for Direct Entry / Direct Interview listed , you will scheduled to take an APTITUDE TEST.  This test will cover both Algebra and Reading Comprehension.

I have taken and passed the aptitude test, now what?

Candidates that receive a passing score on their aptitude test will be scheduled for an interview. Interviews will take place in front of a Committee comprised of both IBEW (Labor) and NECA (Management) members. Each committee member will score you based on your responses. The average of those scores determine your placement on the Ranked List.

What is a ranked list?

A ranked list is a list created by a Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) where applicants for an apprenticeship program are ranked based on their interview scores, with the highest scoring applicant appearing at the top of the list, essentially determining the order in which they will be considered for an apprenticeship position.

How do I know where I am on the ranked list?

Interviews take place monthly, so we do not release your ranking due to the constant fluctuation of placement. Individuals that interview will have access to their overall interview score however.

I haven't heard anything since I received my interview score, when will I know if I got into the Apprenticeship?

Entrance into the Apprenticeship program is largely dependent on industry needs. There is no way to determine how long you may remain on the ranked list, or whether or not you may be selected.

Although your ranking may fluctuate, you will remain on the ranked list for a full year from your interview date. Individuals that wish to re-interview may do so 90 days from their interview date.

If selected for the Apprenticeship, a representative will reach out to contact you immediately.

Is the 4-Year Apprenticeship the only opportunity you offer?

No, in addition to the 4-year program, we also offer a Pre-Apprenticeship program. Entry level work is also available through Local 288. Individuals are encouraged to review our PROGRAM INFORMATION page for more information regarding these opportunities.
